On Friday January 17th the Mooseheads went on the road to take on the Victoriaville Tigers. Here’s a quick look at some of the NHL prospects we felt stood out.
Senna Peeters (4 Star Amateur Rating, NHL Grade — C) Forward
Game Grade: B, The Belgian born Austrian national, who is ranked number 62 among North American Skaters by NHL CSS, has many qualities that could translate to a career at the next level. His skating and vision stood out in this match, where his control of the puck in the neutral zone allowed him to build speed and carry pucks for entries. He made good passes on these rushes, and also took the puck to the net for a wrap-around scoring chance. His crossover skating stuck out the most, particularly on the power play and winding it up in the neutral zone.
Marcel Barinka (4 Star Amateur Rating, NHL Grade — C) Forward
Game Grade: A-, Barinka was one of the better skaters for the Mooseheads, with his line creating a fair amount of their offense. The right shot center has a good skating stride, and a good mind for defensive positioning–good in support down low, and used on the PK. His goal, the only goal of the game for Halifax, came on the PK where he scored on a nice move to the backhand on a breakaway. Barinka, who skated for the Czech Republic at the 2019 World Junior A Challenge, got to quality scoring areas and is a pass-first player, almost to a fault.
Cameron Whynot (4 Star Amateur Rating, 2021 NHL Grade — B+) Defense
Game Grade: B+, Whynot is an important member of the Halifax backend as a rookie. The May 2003-born Nova Scotian is a lanky, mobile, puck-moving D-man. He plays big minutes for the Mooseheads, and in all situations–showcasing his feet and passing ability as the QB of one of the PP units. Whynot gets back to pucks quickly, and maintains a good gap on the rush with his stick and feet. He showed some ability to battle, and though he could stand to gain some muscle, held his own. He took one penalty on a frustration slash, but drew three penalties as well. The 2021 draft eligible skater is one to keep an eye on.
Justin Barron (4.5 Star Amateur Rating, NHL Grade — A) Defense
Justin, our 7th ranked 2020 NHL Draft prospect from December’s rankings, did not play. He is a lanky smooth skating right shot defenseman who makes plays with his head up and while his feet are moving. Is a weapon on the power play as he can walk the line quickly in either direction, has a hard accurate one timer, quick release on his snap shot and his shots do not get blocked. Excellent at joining the rush as a late attacker & has the poise to carry the puck out of danger when needed. He thrives in transition and has an uncanny ability to hit the stretch man in stride.
Grade: DNP – Barron is out indefinitely with a blood clot. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for the 15th Ranked North American Skater by NHL CSS.
