He is intelligent, plays with pace, and understands how to find space and move off the puck to support offense, which is evident in his 1.88 scoring chances per game and efficient finishing (12%), along with solid puck distribution (86% pass completion). He processes quickly, does not hold pucks unnecessarily, and can play within structure at even strength and on the penalty kill (1:27 SHT). However, his game is more complementary than driving. His pre-shot pass generation is predictable (0.5/game), and he is not a primary play driver or creator on the rush or while cycling. Physically, he competes (50% puck battles, 0.66 hits/game), but he does not consistently create separation after contact, and at his size he will need to add strength to handle NHL pace and contact. His puck management (4.1 giveaways vs. 2.6 takeaways) also shows the need for added strength because he can be forced into poor decisions under pressure. The positives are that he is already effective in a pro environment, plays a detail-oriented, responsible game, and can contribute offensively without needing heavy usage. Overall, I believe Hedqvist projects as a middle-six complementary winger with NHL potential, and I do see a path for him to become an NHL player if he adds strength improving his ability to win battles consistently, and becomes more assertive in driving offense rather than supporting it, but he is a 2005 so I believe anything before a late sixth round pick is a waste at developing a younger prospect with higher upside.
