In U20 play (2-17-19 in 21 games), he demonstrates clear offensive ability, reliable puck distribution (90% pass completion, 0.72 pre-shot passes/game) and ability to facilitate from the blue line, while also logging significant minutes in all situations (18:57 TOI, 2:12 PPT, 1:50 SHT). He is composed with the puck, moves it efficiently, and can support the attack, generating offense through movement and decision-making rather than pure dynamic skill. However, his lack of production in 21 Liiga games (0 points) highlights the gap in his current impact against stronger, faster competition, where his game becomes more conservative and less assertive. Defensively, he is reliable (53% puck battles, 0.58 hits/game) but not currently strong enough for a top-four shutdown role, and while he competes, he does not consistently separate himself physically or with urgency. His puck management shows some inconsistency under pressure, particularly at higher pace, and his decision-making can become erratic when time and space are reduced. While he has a well-rounded game and plays a structured, mature style, he lacks a standout tool; whether it be elite skating, physicality, or high-end offensive creativity that clearly projects to NHL impact. Overall, Kotajarvi has a pro foundation as a two-way, puck-moving defenseman, but I view him as a longer-term development prospect, and I do not project him to become an NHL player within a 3-5 year window unless he can translate his offensive confidence to the Liiga level and improve his pace and assertiveness; he is a late round consideration.
