Game Sheet

General Game Notes: Kingston took a 1-0 lead very early into the game but London scored one goal in each of the final two periods to win 2-1. London held a 36-25 advantage in shots but Kingston had the better of the play for much of the second period. Here is a report of the top performers from the game:

Matthew Minchak (G, L, 6’5″, 197, Kingston Frontenacs, 05/23/2007, Colgate)

Comments: Matthew played very well in the 2-1 loss to London. He made 34 saves and only gave up two goals, fending off powerplay and other high quality chances. He didn’t have much of a chance to save either of the goals he gave up as one was a redirect of a point shot and the other was a 2v1 pass to the backdoor. He sees the puck and tracks it well which helps him maintain good positioning. He also has very good size, taking up a lot of net even when he is a bit deep. He made some nice saves on pass outs, getting into position quickly on pucks passed from below the goal line.

Kieren Dervin (LW, L, 6’1″, 186, Kingston Frontenacs, 03/31/2007, Penn State)

Comments: Kieren handles the puck well and can make plays entering the neutral zone. He sees the far side of the ice on zone entries and gets passes across the royal road for chances. He plays an important role on the powerplay for his team where he makes dangerous passes from the flank into the slot and to the weakside. He is also a penalty-killer because of his good speed and footwork. He is able to get to pucks quickly and take away the powerplay’s time and space.

Tomas Pobezal (C, L, 5’10”, 183, Kingston Frontenacs, 09/18/2006)

Comments: Tomas was most noticeable on rushes where he made smart delays to buy time and then hit weakside trailers. He earned an assist on a play like this where he made a hard shot/pass to the slot that was redirected by a net-driver into the goal. He also possesses a one-timer that he took as he received a pass as a trailer on a zone entry. Lastly, he was able to attack through the middle of the neutral zone and execute some bump and drive plays. Tomas played on the penalty kill where he uses his good stick to take away passing lanes.

Maleek McGowan (D, L, 5’11”, 193, Kingston Frontenacs, 06/13/2005)

Comments: Maleek is an offensive defenseman who uses physicality to win pucks and then uses his speed and agility to drive the play up ice. He led many rushes for his team and maneuvered his way through the neutral zone with his agility and quickness. He doesn’t miss an opportunity to jump into the rush and to drive down into space in the offensive zone. He finds space down the walls and also finds space on the weakside to sneak into. He also quarterbacks the powerplay for Kingston. On the defensive side of the puck he is very physical, using his body to separate players from the puck and sometimes delivering big hits.

Robin Kuzma (C, L, 5’10”, 186, Kingston Frontenacs, 01/29/2008)

Comments: Robin is a hard-working center who does his job at both ends of the ice. He plays with good awareness and sees the open spaces well to put himself in good positions to be dangerous offensively and to defend well. He scored a goal by driving the net hard and one-touching a centering pass into the net. He also has confidence with the puck and will expose the seams in the offensive zone when they are left open. He had one play coming out of the corner where he stepped above the goal line and backhanded the puck on net and followed up with another shot on the rebound. He needs to make sure he protects the puck in traffic as he lost the puck once by going to one-hand on his stick in traffic and then being unable to make a play.

Jacob Battaglia (RW, L, 6’1″, 202, Kingston Frontenacs, 03/17/2006)

Comments: Jacob is a skilled winger who can make plays out of tough situations along the walls. He had one nice move where he collected a puck on his forehand along the wall and then waited for the defenseman to bite before spinning off to his backhand. He also had some scoring chances in tight to the net where he deked the goalie but couldn’t quite finish. On zone entries he moves his feet and makes plays putting a lot of pressure on the defenseman. He executed a bump and drive play and then skated hard through the middle and got the puck back and took a shot. He has some separation speed and accelerates quickly which makes him dangerous.

Alexei Medvedev (G, L, 6’3″, 181, London Knights, 09/10/2007)

Comments: Aleksei is explosive in his movements when he goes post to post. He gets a lot of power on his pushes and navigates quickly and efficiently around his net. He handles the puck well and made multiple passes into the neutral zone to help his team attack quickly on transition when the opponent was changing. His depth is good and he uses strong pushes to establish his depth on pass outs. He made many saves in this game, denying 24 of the 25 shots he faced.

Henry Brzustewicz (D, R, 6’2″, 204, London Knights, 02/09/2007)

Comments: Henry is a two-way defenseman who angles off rushes and then leads the rush in the opposite direction. He defends well and does his job in the defensive zone. He then takes any opportunity he gets to use his speed to get up ice and be a part of rushes, often leading them himself. He had an assist by moving his feet up ice with the puck on the breakout creating a 2v1 and then looked off the defender and making a pass across the royal road on a 2v1 that his teammate buried. He almost had another point on a 2v1 play where he received the puck across the royal road and then touched it back to his teammate who couldn’t quite finish it. In the offensive zone Henry will drive down the walls and look to make passes into the middle of the ice. He missed 10 minutes of this game because he served a misconduct for having his jersey tucked in.

Sam O’Reilly (C, R, 6’1″, 184, London Knights, 03/30/2006)

Comments: Sam is a versatile center who can make a positive impact in all situations for his team. He is a relentless and tough defender, using his good stick and physicality to break up plays in the defensive zone and on the penalty-kill. On the penalty kill he was a great F1, trapping the opponent in their zone and denying the middle of the ice. He goes hard everywhere on the ice, disrupting forechecks and driving the net hard on zone entries. Although the defensive side and strong work ethic are what really separate him, he can also make plays with the puck on his stick. Sam earned an assist by making a nice breakout pass that resulted in a 2v1. He also created some other chances with nice centering passes on rushes. He plays on the powerplay where his smart puck management was an asset as he was able to identify some passing lanes to players near the net front.

Benjamin Wilmott (LW, L, 6’1″, 189, London Knights, 08/30/2006, Ohio State)

Comments: Ben is an offensive threat who created a lot of scoring chances on the powerplay against Kingston. He moved around on the powerplay and spent time at both the top of the umbrella and the flank. He understands when to pass and when to shoot, being a play-making and goal-scoring threat. Ben pushes the pace through the neutral zone, pushing defenders back with his speed and work ethic.

Braidy Wassilyn (C, L, 5’11”, 194, London Knights, 05/28/2008, Boston University)

Comments: Braidy scored both goals for London in the 2-1 win. He found the back of the net for the first time with a great redirect of a point shot off of a faceoff play. His second goal was off of a one-timer on a pass that came across the middle on a 2v1 rush. He could have had a few more goals as he created some other excellent chances. Braidy can pass the puck well on his backhand making him a threat in all directions on rush situations. He handles the puck well and has the confidence to make moves through defenders hands. There was one play where he pulled the puck through a defenders stick and then pushed it back through again, manipulating the defenseman before moving the puck. When he possesses the puck in the offensive zone corners he will use quick cutbacks to evade defenders and buy time and space. On the forecheck he will battle and work to get pins in the corners.

Comments: Mikhail is a tall center who makes an impact by winning faceoffs and making plays in-tight to the net. He set up a goal for London with a faceoff win that enabled them to run a faceoff play and resulted in a goal. He also made some good passes across the front of the net to create scoring chances and he almost had a goal himself on a puck he one-timed in close to the net off of a pass out.

Jaxon Cover (RW, L, 6’2″, 182, London Knights, 02/13/2008)

Comments: Jaxon is a high-energy winger who creates a lot of offensive chances and pushes the pace for his team. He created many scoring chances by moving the puck well on zone entries and on the powerplay. He had an assist in the game as the center won the puck back to him and he quickly made a pass to the middle D who made a shot-pass that was redirected into the net. The speed and urgency of play seems to increase whenever he is on the ice, not only because of his own speed and work ethic but because he attacks quickly in transition and moves the puck up ice. Jaxon head-manned the puck when he had open options ahead of him and also turned and shot quickly after intercepting a puck on the forecheck. He’s dangerous and is an exciting player to watch because of the energy and urgency he brings to the ice.
