USHL: Lincoln at Sioux City

A blowout win for the Musketeers scoring seven goals total with two power play goals in the mix. One of the more impressive stats from the game and a reason why the Musketeers should have a solid team this year is the fact they had seven different goal scorers in tonight’s match.

Jimmy JurcevLincoln StarsUSHLRD6’5″198Notre Dame | 2024Palos Heights, IL2003Free Agent

Game Grade: B+

Jurcev was second among Lincoln defenseman with 19:55 in total ice time including 1:49 on the power play and 3:55 while shorthanded. He finished -1 with 0 points, 1 shot, 0 hits, 7 giveaways and 7 takeaways.

Comments: He’s not the most dynamic player with the puck, but he handles what’s in front of him efficiently, makes good reads, and closes quickly. With his size and strength he rarely gets beat along the wall. He pins guys along the wall and eliminates them from the play. He showed tonight that he can be relied on getting the puck out of his own zone and keep pucks out of his net. He boxes out well and clears lanes for his goalie to see the puck. Jurcev is a force and a presence on the ice, kills penalties well clearing out the net front and being a shot blocker from the flank shooters.

German YavashLincoln StarsUSHLLLW6’3″208Western Michigan | 2024Minsk, BLR2003Free Agent

Game Grade: B+

Yavash played 4th line minutes but made an impact as he totaled 8:44 in ice time. He did not play on either special teams unit. He finished with +1 with 1 goal, 2 shots, 1 grade “A” opportunity, 2 PIMs, 3 hits, received 1 hit, had 1 shot blocked, 4 giveaways and 1 takeaway.

Comments: Yavash scored the lone goal for the Stars tonight. The big bodied forward was able to show that he protects the puck extremely well and will commonly shake past or around opposing players, building speed through his crossovers to hang onto the puck inside the offensive zone until a play presents itself. He moves extremely well for his size and having a long and smooth stride and great breakaway speed. Yavash really excels under pressure, he invites the one on one looking to beat players close in space, rather than in open ice where his length and size could be a down size for him.

Dashel OliverLincoln StarsUSHLRF5’9″179Nebraska Omaha | 2025Bloomington, IN2005Free Agent

Game Grade: B

Oliver totaled 15:27 in ice time including a Lincoln forward high 3:47 while shorthanded. He did not play on the power play. He finished even with 0 points, 2 shots, 2 PIMs, 1 hit, received 2 hits, 7 giveaways and 1 takeaway.

Comments: Oliver showed tonight that he has speed in his game. He does such a good job identifying lanes and attacking into them and taking what the defense gives him. He will look for his own play when it’s there or play in a quick give-and-go when spacing tightens up. He seems to create constantly with his motor he has in the offensive. He is on the smaller side and can get bumped off the puck a couple too many times but his speed to recover is noticeable. He made a couple trap passes from behind the goal line to the slot that did not look like they were open but found their way to the goalie anyways.

Samuel UrbanSioux City MusketeersUSHLLG6’1″196Arizona State | 2024Puchov, SVK20052023-2024: C 2022-2023: C

Game Grade: B

Comments: Stopping 19 of 20 shots tonight, Urban really did not see much action but was clean when he did. Sometimes it can be tougher for a goalie not be involved in the game as much and have such a good sixty minutes. One thing Urban did well I assume to stay present is play the puck when he could. This kept him out of his net and in the play keeping possession moving forward. He did a good job at swallowing shots that could have been contested at the net front by opposing net drives in his face

Ty HansonSioux City MusketeersUSHLRD5’9″175Minnesota Duluth | 2024Hermantown, MN20052023-2024: C2022-2023: C

Game Grade: A-

Hanson totaled 18:43 in ice time including 4:09 on the power play and 2:11 while shorthanded. He finished +2 with 1 goal, 2 assists, 2 shots, 1 grade “A” opportunity, 2 PIMs, 0 hits, received 1 hit, 4 giveaways and 8 takeaways.

Comments: The elusive defenseman has great mobility throughout the entire ice sheet. On the blue line, he is able to walk the width forcing blockers to play him closely. One second he is at the point, the next he is diving into the slot. He showed really good poise with the puck both on the power play and on breakouts. He does not force plays rather has the patience to wait players out opening up different lanes. Hanson is a tough defenseman to keep up with and wants to be involved in the offense consistently.

Jonah AegerterSioux City MusketeersUSHLRC5’9″178St. Cloud | 2024Janesville, WI2004Free Agent

Game Grade: B

Aegerter finished with 15:04 in total ice time including a team high 3:52 while shorthanded. He did not play on the power play. He finished +1 with 1 assist, o shots, 0 hits, received 1 hit, 8 giveaways and 2 takeaways.

Comments: Aegerter is fast. This is one of the main characteristics of his game and defenders need to play him accordingly. He does a good job at getting open before the puck finds him, actually the puck usually finds him because of how well he gets open. He forces defenseman to back out of the offensive zone making breakouts easier to handle. At times, he tends to shy away from contact instead of getting in the fight. He is too fast to allow the puck the be passed by him during his shifts. Too many shifts tonight he skated the longest distance without a puck touch.

Max StrandSioux City MusketeersUSHLRF5’9″193Vermont | 2024Roseau, MN2003Free Agent

Game Grade: A-

Strand was second among Sioux City forwards with 17:34 in total ice time including 3:36 on the power play and 0:29 while shorthanded. He finished +2 with 1 goal, 2 assists, 1 shot, 1 grade “A” opportunity, 5/16 on face-offs, 0 hits, received 1 hit, had 1 shot blocked, 5 giveaways and 2 takeaways.

Comments: In the middle of the second period, Strand got on the board with a nice power play goal. Strand has the skill to get the puck on the goal line position, in tight get the puck in a scoring position, and beat the goalie. All while getting pressure from usually some of the more bigger defenders on the ice. He does not let his size dictate where he wants to take the puck. He has quick and smooth hands that he showed during his power play goal, with fast reactions and little stick handling.

Ethan GardulaSioux City MusketeersUSHLLLW6’1″188Connecticut | 2024Princeton, MA20052023-2024: B-

Game Grade: A-

Gardula totaled 13:12 in ice time including 3:35 on the power play. He did not play shorthanded. He finished +2 with 1 goal, 2 assists, 1 shot, 1 grade “A”, 1/1 on face-offs, 0 hits, 1 giveaway and 3 takeaways.

Comments: Gardula is a big presence on the ice. He is tenacious as F1 on the forecheck, Who is not afraid to finish his checks. He has fantastic vision and playmaking upside, especially on the power play where he has time and space. He attracts defenders then slides pucks to his open teammates. The big man scored an impressive goal on his back hand in tight beating the goalie over the shoulder. He uses his size well to gain body position and then skill takes over to beat able to beat goalies and players.

Ren MorqueSioux City MusketeersUSHLLD6’1″190Grand Rapids, MN2003Free Agent

Game Grade: B+

Morque totaled 14:04 in total ice time including 0:11 on the power play and 1:01 while shorthanded. He finished +3 with 1 goal, 1 shot , 1 grade “A” opportunity, 0 hits, had 1 shot blocked, 3 giveaways and 7 takeaways.

Comments: Morque showed tonight that he manages play in front of him with incredible poise and comfort, directing and influencing play all the way down the ice. He is able to advance play under pressure inside his own zone, effortlessly side-stepping forecheckers to headman pucks, that is where he is best at his game. Scored a nice goal tonight using his feet and expanding the entire offensive zone. After beating multiple defenseman in their place, he was able to wrap the puck on the goalie beating him for one of the nicer goals of the game.

Hagen BurrowsSioux City MusketeersUSHLRC6’2″165Denver | 2025Long Lake, MN20052023-2024: B

Game Grade: A-

Burrows totaled 13:01 in ice time including 3:57 on the power play. He did not play shorthanded. He finished +2 with 3 assists, 1 shot, 1 grade “A” opportunity, 0 hits, had 1 shot blocked, 7 giveaways and 0 takeaways.

Comments: Burrows had such a productive game finding open teammates in scoring area. With three assists on the night he was able to showcase his puck movement ability along with his patience. He does a good job at not forcing plays rather stays calm under pressure. Pressure can mean having the penalty kill be stagnant, some players feel the need to move the puck or body in order to create something, but Burrows keeps the play in front of him allowing something to open up naturally. He defends well physically making him one of the better 200ft players in the game tonight.

Kaden ShahanSioux City MusketeersUSHLRRW5’11”162Connecticut | 2024Everett, WA2005Free Agent

Game Grade: A-

Shahan led Sioux City forwards with 20:13 time on ice including 2:37 on the power play and 2:38 while shorthanded. He finished +1 with 1 goal, 1 shot, 2 grade “A” opportunities, 1/1 on face-offs, 1 hit, received 1 hit, 7 giveaways and 7 takeaways.

Comments: Shahan was able to show tonight that he is a multi-faceted shooter who can score from the top of the circles with his wrister but also gets down to one knee and really powers through a good one-touch shot, skills which have helped him excel on both the flank and the bumper on the power play. Shahan uses a unique combination of grit and speed to become an offensive threat, it is not enough for him to get the puck on entries, he wants to the puck back and hunts and works hard to create turnovers.

Dylan GodboutSioux City MusketeersUSHLLF5’11”190Ohio State | 2024Woodbury, MN20042023-2024: C 2021-2022: C

Game Grade: A-

Godbout totaled 16:08 in ice time including leading Sioux City in power play ice time with 4:09. He did not kill penalties. He finished +2 with 1 goal, 1 assist, 2 shots, 3 grade “A” opportunities, 1/4 on face-offs, 1 hit, received 1 hit, had 1 shot blocked, 11 giveaways and 2 takeaways.

Comments: Godbout scored a nice goal tonight on the power play getting low and burying a one timer. You can pick up the skill and intelligence in his game by how he positions himself and how he reacts when he is in prime scoring areas. Other than his power play skill, Godbout displays great compete and puck protection skills. He’s able to quickly get the inside edge with his speed and has the ability to constantly battle and engage on the forecheck.
