Rudy Guimond (G, L, 6’3″, 180, Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, 05/19/2005, Yale)

Grade: A-

Comments: The Quebec native uses his size to his advantage and makes his movements and routes as simple as possible. Playing deeper in his crease and gaining depth when needed when plays are in zone. His movement seems slightly hindered in his hip mobility and doesn’t see precision but isn’t necessary. He seals the ice well when pucks are at awkward angles and behind the net. Very occasionally finding himself outside of his crease scrambling he only uses when necessary. Dropping into pucks and centering his body well but sometimes overcommitting to plays. Giving up all three goals in the final seven minutes coming up shy of two points for the RoughRiders. Grade: A-

Melvin Strahl (G, L, 6’3″, 166, Youngstown Phantoms, 03/18/2005, Michigan State)

Grade: A

Comments: Youngstown: Melvin Strahl (2005) The Columbus draft pick from Sweden has movement that is technically sound and he quickly sets his feet on pucks. A big part of penalty kills in this one making some big saves and keeping the Phantoms in this game. His sound rebound control sees an active stick and calm body to smother pucks and dictate the pace of play. A calm presence in the crease as he uses his size well, moves with power and precision. A few deflections were the only blemishes on the score sheet. Frequent shoulder checks and scans allow him to read and stay ahead of plays and tracks pucks well enabling him to maintain his feet. Smooth and comfortable in his posts he seals the ice well and maintains his feet when needed. A good performance here and two points for the Phantoms. Grade: A
