Stephen Peck (G, L, 6’2″, 180, Muskegon Lumberjacks, 01/18/2005, Michigan)
Grade: B
Comments: The New York product centers his body well on threats and stays within his game inside the crease. His feet tend to widen as plays approach following up into his butterfly where his knees flare and causes him to reach for pucks. Pucks elevated to his hands then were more difficult to make saves and track pucks yet drop into them and stay compact. Making a good use of a stance differential to see through and around screens aids in screens. He takes frequent shoulder checks and doesn’t get all of pucks at times but keeps them in front of him or uses his larger frame to get a piece of them and direct to the corners or behind the net. Movement in his posts is smooth and condensed and he seems comfortable in a reverse with good stick positioning and sealing holes. Ultimately struggling with pucks to his hands and widening, Peck and the Lumberjacks drop this one. Grade: B
Phileas Lachat (G, L, 6’3″, 187, Waterloo Black Hawks, 06/11/2006)
Grade: A-
Comments: Swiss born Lachat uses his size well and keeps a balanced approach to his game that provides stability in the crease. His steady hands and use of a stance differential keep him mobile, centered on pucks, and calm in the crease. His stance frequently widens causing his backside leg to constantly regain to stay mobile. This causing holes through his body and midsection at times. Effective rebound control not perfect but kept pucks in front of him to be corralled and covered or help to arrive. A more active and positioned stick could aid in deflecting passes and directing pucks. Precision with his movement could be improved with more frequent scans and shoulder checks to read plays. Comfortable in his posts but struggling with an overlap or decision making in awkward angles caught him early. A good set of fundamentals and a solid base is enough to get Waterloo the two points.
