Prep Poll #5

#1 Avon Old Farms defeated NMH 7-0 and rival Westminster 6-2 since our last Poll. #5 St. Mark’s had a massive week with wins over #6 Belmont Hill and #8 St. George’s. Dexter and Berkshire stayed hot while others faltered. The top is taking shape, while the bottom of the rankings remains unpredictable. Here are our Top 10 for this week.

  1. Avon Old Farms (10-2-0) – The Winged Beavers have played excellent hockey at both ends. They have only given up 22 goals in 13 games. Anthony Palmer has a 94.3% save percentage as Indiana Grossbard rapidly climbs the NE Prep goal leaderboard with over 16. They play Loomis Wednesday, followed by Choate.
  2. St. Mark’s (12-1-2) – the Lions played a terrific road game on Saturday to earn the tough win against St. George’s. Our eyes tell us they are well-coached with pace and grit. They are young and powered by a skilled set of forwards and steady defensemen. Evan Nee leads the way for our #2 team at both ends and is a top NE Prep player.
  3. Dexter (13-3-0) -Dexter beat Brooks School on Saturday and heads to St. George’s on Wednesday for one of the week’s biggest games. Defenseman Myles Brosnan and clever forward Rian Chudzinsky have led the way on a balanced and improving roster. They could be #2 here, but we want more eyes on this team.
  4. Berkshire (13-3-0) -Berkshire lost to Choate last Wednesday but has had a week to think about it and regroup. Expect Duncan Thompson and Matthew Lacombe to be ready come Wednesday. The Bears seemed destined for a shot this year, and we stand by that.
  5. Brunswick (16-3-2) – This is where the poll gets interesting and the final five all have a great chance to be in the Elite Eight. The Bears have recovered from a tough home weekend with Dexter with three straight wins. It’s an intriguing team with a lot of athletes.
  6. Belmont Hill (12-3-3) – The Hillies lost to St. Mark’s 4-2 with two ENGs on Wednesday but rebounded on the road against a solid Tabor squad. Defenseman Evan Jones has six points in his last three games and Patrick Woods has had the hot stick up front with four points on three goals in the previous two wins for BHS. Next up is Brooks at home.
  7. Kimball Union (16-5-2) -With two losses in the last three games, KUA has made life more difficult for themselves. They have Exeter and Tilton at home in their next two games. Must win contests, perhaps, but Kimball Union seldom disappoints. The Defending Champs will be prepared.
  8. Holderness (11-3-1) -The most contested ranking at NZ Prep. Holderness had the win/loss record to deserve to be here. However, they lost to New Hampton, and The Bulls have a substantial three-game stretch in four days, starting Wednesday: Brewster, at New Hampton and Brooks.
  9. St. George’s (11-5-1) -The Dragons were outplayed by #2 St. Mark’s at home on Saturday. They have St. Mark’s again in February and Dexter this Wednesday at home. A win at the Dragon Den would go a long way to staying firmly in the top eight. It is our game of the week and we will be in attendance.
  10. Salisbury (10-4-3) -The Knights tied Trinity-Pawling last week and beat Kent on Saturday. They play on the road at Fred Gunn on Wednesday and at Berkshire on Saturday. They stay at #10 for now as their schedule has been and will be more demanding than those on the outside looking in. Salisbury at Berkshire will be another top game.

Last out: Deerfield, Tilton, Cushing
