QMJHL: Rimouski Oceanic at Baie-Comeau Drakkar (10/31/2020)

This Quebec League matchup had a lot of energy, especially for an afternoon game. Both teams played an up-tempo style in a fast-paced and entertaining contest. Final score was 4-3 for Baie-Comeau. This report focuses on Rimouski’s 2021 NHL Draft Eligible players.

Rimouski draft eligible players

Isaac BelliveauMagog CantonniersQMAAALD6’2″185Rimouski Océanic | 2018Orford, QC20022020-2021: B+

A left-handed shooting defenseman with good size, a nice shot and outstanding passing skills. Beliveau was especially effective with the puck on his stick in the offensive zone. He created scoring chances by getting the puck to open forwards, and consistently made the right call when deciding whether to join the play offensively or pull back and defend. In the first period, he took a pass at the blueline and began moving to his right, luring Baie Comeau defenders into following him across the ice. He then abruptly stopped, moved quickly back to his left, and used the now-open shooting lane to put Rimouski up 1-0 with a quick wrist shot from the point. Rating: A

Frederic BrunetRimouski OceanicQMJHLLD6’2″176Rimouski OceanicGatineau, QC2003Not yet rated

We didn’t know much about Brunet, a LHS defenseman, before watching him in this matchup. But the one thing that was obvious about his game is his skating. Brunet used his speed to effectively defend, and push the play forward throughout the contest. When Rimouski got caught making a bad line change in the third period, Brunet was able to get back in the play defensively and effectively break up an odd-man rush for Baie Comeau. He made a number of quick, accurate passes out of the defensive zone, as well. Rating: B

Gauthier played a good, no-frills game. He had nice mobility, and made a number of clean, accurate passes to clear the defensive zone. He played a safe game. Rating: C+
