Former USports Assistant Coach
Andrew has over 20 years of coaching and scouting expertise. He began coaching with Guelph Minor Hockey, where he worked with a wide variety of age groups at the A, AA, and AAA levels. During this time, he also helped lead the association’s Team Development Program, focusing on the development of both players and coaches. He later worked with the OHF/OHL/Hockey Canada U15 Program of Excellence for two seasons. Andrew has been a Can/Am Hockey Instructor for 15 years as a Player Development Coach and also works with the OMHA, running clinics and seminars for new coaches. In the summer months, he holds various Player Development roles, working with both Junior and professional hockey players.
DeGroot’s Junior and USports coaching career began with the GOJHL Waterloo Siskins, where he won a Cherry Cup League Championship. He then became an Assistant Coach with the USports powerhouse Guelph Gryphons. While at Guelph University, DeGroot helped guide the Gryphons to a USports Queen’s Cup Championship in 2020.
DeGroot’s scouting background is equally extensive. He has worked as a Mentorship Coordinator with International Scouting Service. At the NCAA Division I level, he worked with Canisius College for several seasons. At the professional level, Andrew has been a Scout for the Toledo Walleye, the ECHL affiliate of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings.
